Coffee & Careers: Beyond Academia, Navigating STEM Careers in the Age of AI
Join the Cornell Club of the United Kingdom for an informal and engaging Coffee & Careers conversation focused on navigating STEM careers in today’s rapidly evolving, AI-driven landscape.
In this candid session, our speaker will share personal insights on building a resilient career as a STEM-trained professional at a time when traditional research paths — particularly in fields such as physics and astronomy — face mounting funding pressures, while opportunities in data science and AI continue to expand and grow more competitive.
What we’ll cover:
- How to translate research-honed skills into data-intensive industry careers
- Leveraging strengths such as quantitative thinking, coding, and working with messy, real-world data
- What has changed since the major transition wave into data science (2019–2021)
- How the rise of data science degrees and free online resources has shifted expectations and competition
- Practical, experience-based strategies for standing out and staying adaptable in an uncertain job market
This session is designed especially for early-career professionals, students, and anyone considering a transition beyond academia. The format will be relaxed and interactive, with plenty of time for discussion and questions.
