Cornell Cares – CCUK Volunteer Day
In the spirit of community, join Cornellians for a clean-up (cleaning, painting etc) at Sea Cadets on the Putney Embankment.
Sea Cadets is a national organisation that equips young people (10-18 years) of all backgrounds with life skills through waterborne activities, adventure, and training, referencing the traditions of the Royal Navy. The Putney unit (officially called Sea Cadets Wandsworth, Chelsea & Fulham) is a small, self-financed youth charity that has been operating since 1948. Hundreds of young girls and boys have benefitted from the opportunities at the Unit. As they say:
“We can teach teenagers to drive powerboats before they are even old enough to apply for a driving license….” Would you like to make a difference, have fun and be active? Then help us guide and mentor 10-18 year olds through nautical adventures and challenges. Our Cadets make new friends, develop leadership skills and gain useful qualifications (Duke of Edinburgh and BTECs). We have excellent facilities located next to Putney bridge. The Unit is a recognized RYA Training Centre as well as A BCU and British Rowing centre. BUT no boating experience required! The Unit has about 35 Cadets – 10 Juniors (10 -12) and 25 Seniors (12 -18) and parades 3 times per week (Tuesday Evenings for juniors, Friday Evening for seniors, and Sunday 10:00 – 16:00 for everyone.) Weekday parades are more classroom-based and our Sundays are spent on the water at Putney.
As an aside, the Putney Embankment is the illustrious stage from where the annual Oxford – Cambridge boat race departs (Sunday April 13, 2025). This year, the event will be joining forces with Chanel, the first ever sporting sponsorship undertaken by Chanel).
Seeking a few Cornell volunteers – please sign up if you can come!
